8 Tips for a Supremely Organized Winter Garage

Winter Garage Door Tips | Martin Door

Thursday, February 18, 2016

Garage doors have a tough job during the winter. With freezing temperatures, strong winds and damaging precipitation, garage doors can take a beating all winter long. To help keep your residential or commercial garage doors in good condition and free from drafts, try these winter garage door tips for maintenance and troubleshooting.

Examine Moving Parts

The rollers, tracks and springs are especially susceptible to extreme cold. As you look over these moving parts, it is very important to be careful around the torsion springs and cables. You do not want to adjust the tension on the springs because the garage door could malfunction and physically hurt you. If you do have defective rollers or broken springs, be sure to contact a professional to repair these parts.

Inspect the Lubrication

With low winter temperatures, grease and oil tend to thicken and cause your garage door to run roughly. To help keep these parts clean, you can gently wipe any grease build-up off the rollers and tracks. In addition, it is helpful to apply a high-grade white lithium grease lubricant spray on the rollers, bearings, hinges and springs.

Check the Garage Door Insulation

To keep your garage door warm, you should check the garage door weather strips for proper sealing. When water freezes around the bottom of a closed garage door, the seal can rip or peel away when the door is opened. You may have an expensive heating bill or unwanted pests if the garage door strips are damaged. As much as possible, keep your garage door clear of ice and snow to prevent any damaged weather stripping.

Evaluate Garage Door Windows

If your garage doors have windows, you should also check the window seals for any peeling or cracks. Obviously, damaged window seals will need to be replaced, but the window’s frame and glass may need to be fixed as well.

Clean the Door’s Exterior

You may find debris or salty build-up on your garage door’s exterior during a severe winter. By cleaning off the outside of your garage door with a suitable cleaning product, you can prevent rust, or surface damage.

Test Remote Control Batteries

Cold weather also has an adverse effect on batteries. If your remote control garage door opener seems sluggish or spotty, be sure to replace the batteries right away so you are not left out in the cold.

These garage door tips are easy to perform but could help a lot in keeping your garage dry and in good condition this winter. If you need help with your residential and commercial garage doors in the St. Louis metro area, be sure to contact Martin Garage Door & Window for assistance.

Top 5 reasons to call a garage door service and repair professional | Martin Door

If your garage door isn’t working correctly, don’t try to find the problem and fix it yourself. Not only is do-it-yourself garage door repair unsafe, it can also be more costly than having it done by garage door professionals if you don’t get it right the first time. And most garage door repairs can e done quickly by a garage door technician, saving you stress and hassle.

Below are the top five reasons to call a garage door service and repair professional. If your garage door is showing any of these signs, give Martin Door & Window a call. We promise fast, expert service for all of your garage door needs.

Your electric garage door opener runs but the door doesn’t seem to move.

This usually happens because the emergency release is disconnected or the opener gear is stripped. In both cases, a garage door repair from a professional is necessary.

The remote controls or keyless entry isn’t working when you use your electric opener,  so your garage door won’t go up or down.

When this happens, the solution could be as simple as changing the battery. In other cases, the remote or keyless entry is faulty or you have a bad receiver board in the opener. A garage door technician can diagnose the problem quickly and offer a solution.

Your garage door goes up about 6 inches and goes back down.

This is a common problem – and usually a broken spring is to blame.  The good news, however, is that it is usually a quick repair.  Don’t attempt to fix a broken garage door spring on your own because it can result in injury.

Your garage door is making a loud popping noise.

That sound you are hearing could be caused by steel door sections that are cracked and weak, or the track is bent. You could also have some broken hinges/bad rollers.

Your garage door won’t go down.

The garage door safety photocells are likely misaligned or dirty, A loose wire or object blocking the path of the safety photocells are also possible causes.

If you’re experiencing one of these problems with your garage door, call the team at Martin Door & Window. We can have your garage door working again in no time.

Tips on How to Choose the Best Garage Door for Your Home | Martin Door

Friday, March 25, 2016

Spring is the time of year when homeowners start thinking about spring-cleaning – and you know how this goes – with spring cleaning spring home renovation. One of the easiest spring transformations you can give your home is to replace your garage door. In fact, now is the time if the harsh winter months battered your garage door’s structure.

Below are some things to consider before choosing the best garage door for your home.

Does It Have Style?

When you’re replacing the existing garage doors, the choices can be a bit confusing since there are so many options. First, you need to think about the style of the new garage door. For example, styles like the Avante collection, created with contemporary aluminum and glass, work great with modern homes. The Canyon Ridge collection, which features the texture of natural wood in a style that is reminiscent of carriage house doors, is a great compliment to a traditional style home.

To Insulate or Not Insulate?

In a climate like the one in Missouri, you’ll need to consider a new garage door that is insulated to protect the items inside. Whether your garage is attached or not, you want to keep the garage insulated from the harsh cold of winter as well as the warmth of summer. Customers often choose insulated doors because they provide energy efficiency especially for a garage that is attached to the home.

What’s It Made Of?

When choosing a garage door, it’s important to consider what materials it’s made from. Every door we sell at Martin Door is built to last. In fact, our Clopay doors are constructed with hot-dipped galvanized layers as well as baked primer and topcoat. Your garage door will not need repainting every year and many of our collections – like the Clopay Classic collection – are available in three, two or one-layer construction with an Intellicore and vinyl backed insulation.

Can I Afford It?

Expensive garage doors are not necessarily better than more inexpensive options. For those working with a limited budget, Clopay offers a variety of collections guaranteed to be easy on your pocketbook. Like more expensive doors, they too will provide long-lasting durability and energy-efficiency for extra to the homeowner.

The garage door you choose for your home should match its design and style – all while being affordable, energy-efficient and durable. Ready to tackle that spring home improvement project? Martin Door and Window has a huge variety of garage doors and one is sure to add curb appeal to your home. Contact us today!
